The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any significant prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a demand to include fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles globally and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier game development, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
