The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Alleges Parent Company Prevented Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Product
One of the original creators behind the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has claimed how parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the launch for a new pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, that established the company alongside his partner, revealed how he will personally create the controversial product within a personal series highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's was barred from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Founders and Parent Company
This latest announcement escalates the continuing tension between the internationally recognized ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the British packaged goods corporation which acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders have claimed how the parent company along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented their company from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Flavor becoming a Symbol of Solidarity
The entrepreneur revealed through an Instagram video that he's developing an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas regarding naming options and potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen commented from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”
The watermelon has become a symbol for solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its colors, which match the colors in the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Historical Social Engagement plus Current Developments
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever selling their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales in disputed territories.
The new product line is being developed under Ben's Best, the socially conscious ice cream brand which originally established several years back to support former political contender Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Changes plus Upcoming Intentions
The founder indicated that he plans to develop additional ice cream flavors focusing on concerns which the company was prevented from speaking about openly by Unilever.
This development follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at the company in September, following many years of involvement, mentioning concerns regarding how its independence was compromised after Unilever's decision to curb its social activism.
Previously, Mr. Cohen stated that “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy so that the company can achieve its ethical purpose, the values which established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
