The Hit Drama Confirmed for 7th Season on the British Broadcaster
The beloved crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th season, confirmed by the BBC.
An upcoming six-part series written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the production team.
Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."
The last season wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but official word only came this week.
New Challenges for The Team
Series seven will open with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue working to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.
Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case so far."
Fresh Face and Intricate Plot
An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.
However, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the background, plot details suggested.
In a statement, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."
"We're privileged to have had countless followers track the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new season."
Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."
Actor Responses
Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".
"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"
Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together soon."
"Delighted with the news and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."
Series Legacy
The drama premiered in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful television series of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Lennie James.
The BBC has not yet announced when the upcoming series will hit screens.
The conclusion of season six brought the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no intentions for further series.
However, the corporation announced on this week that a new season is now in development.
