Citizens have come together around the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-led assault on 7 October 2023, as talks proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in Gaza.

The attack resulted in in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single deadliest day for Jewish people since the World War II.

Israel answered by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"Our violent enemies have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on that day.

He also pledged to "achieve all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will no longer present a risk to Israel".

Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel

The government authorities rescheduled formal remembrance events until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still were held across the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the families of Israelis who died in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was aired across Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a moment of silence was held across the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to review the terms of the plan.

A senior delegate knowledgeable about the talks revealed that an evening round of mediated discussions started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The source said the day's discussions concluded without significant progress, amid disagreements over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the first phase of the agreement.

He added that the talks are "difficult and have not yet produce any significant progress," but noted that mediators are working hard to reduce the gaps between the conflicting groups.

Critical Points in Negotiations

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The exchange of the hostages still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The pullout of troops from Gaza
  • Plans for humanitarian aid provision
  • Post-war management of the territory

Citizen Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square previously, young a woman - whose family member survived the assault on the outdoor event, where 378 people were killed and dozens more were abducted by Hamas militants - shared: "No place seems like home now and until all the hostages come back not a single person will have peace of mind."

"When we see all home returned, we can relax anew. Then we can begin to recover," she added.

Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to show their solidarity for the relatives of the abducted. Israel reports nearly fifty remain in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.

Protester one woman remarked: "We must do every compromise required for the captives to be released. But we really want assurances that we will be secure."

Surveys now frequently demonstrate that around seventy percent of Israelis prefer the hostilities to conclude in exchange for the release of the captives.

Gaza Conditions

At the location of the gathering, those paying respects gathered to remember the victims.

From there, the sound of military attacks and artillery could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers indicated the heavy Israeli shelling carried on.

In the main city, bombardments were noted in the dawn of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, area and Nasr districts and in the east side neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"When the evening arrives, the anxiety arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack previously, described.

"We are afraid of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, embracing, notably my youngest child who places his head on me all night."

"Continuously we monitor the reports to see developments. And I'm worried that this halt will not be completed and that the conflict will resume to us."

Medical Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area announced it had received the bodies of several people by the afternoon, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the southern area.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of that area indicated additional victims had been delivered. An individual was killed by Israeli troops while seeking aid to the south, health workers stated.
