Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
A minimum of 16 people were killed and more than 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have labeled a act of terrorism.
As of the newest reports, officials have stated the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.
The victims are still awaiting publicly named, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the victims who have been identified to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.
She described the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Officially, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was among those killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who responded to the attack.
A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
