British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer behind some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the soft-colored suits that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
His passing follows shortly after he unveiled his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in designing sculptural silhouettes established him as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as several ensembles for her American tour after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
