An Tale of Surprising Generosity: When a University Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dormitory Floor

Back in 2006, I made a trip to Canberra for a medical school interview. My plan was to book lodging upon arrival, yet when I arrived, a major event was taking place and all the youth hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.

Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, I thought perhaps I could just sleep at the airport – but soon learned that airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open around the clock. Unsure of how to proceed and getting a bit desperate, I caught a bus into town and began walking towards the casino, thinking I could pass those hours somewhere that was open through the night. That wouldn’t put me in the ideal condition for nailing an interview the next morning, but as a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

Our society requires more folks who show such kindness.

It seems I seemed confused because a woman spotted me walking aimlessly through the city and asked whether I needed help. I shared my situation and right away she suggested I was welcome to sleep on the floor of her dormitory at the Australian National University – a perfect solution, as that’s where my interview was scheduled for the next day. She went further by offering some food: one of the stuffed baguettes she brought back her work shift. This gave me warm shower facilities and a protected spot to rest to sleep.

With hindsight, I now understand what a big chance she accepted as a young woman inviting a guy who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. At that time I was in my male privilege bubble and did not consider about things like that. Now, as a father, I am astonished she offered that help – but still incredibly thankful.

I didn’t end up go to ANU, and I didn’t meet the student afterwards, yet her memory has stayed with me her selfless deed of kindness. It is my wish the universe has returned her generosity abundantly. Our society requires more folks like that woman.
