Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and championed its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family go about their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his hope to help comedy break out of its long-running layer of irony. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to bask in the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
